Construction of a new purpose-built Assembly Hall and Theatre

Melhuish & Saunders Ltd was appointed by Somerset Council to deliver a major investment in the facilities at Pyrland School, Taunton, comprising the construction of a new purpose-built Assembly Hall and Theatre, alongside the comprehensive refurbishment of the existing dining hall.
The project was carefully planned and delivered within a live educational environment, ensuring that disruption to pupils, staff and the day-to-day operation of the school was kept to an absolute minimum while providing modern, high-quality facilities for future generations.

New purpose-built assembly hall and theatre

Refurbishment of the existing dining hall

Fixed and demountable theatre stage

Modern foyer and reception space

DDA-compliant facilities

Air conditioning and natural ventilation systems

7.8kW rooftop solar PV installation

New external access and improved accessibility throughout

Modern LED lighting and integrated AV facilities

CONSTRUCTION & DESIGN

The new Assembly Hall was constructed using a structural steel frame supported on reinforced concrete foundations, with steel frame system (SFS) external walls finished in brickwork and contemporary steel cladding.

The insulated single-ply membrane roof provides a durable and energy-efficient solution while complementing the school's existing buildings.
Designed as a flexible multi-purpose space, the building provides a modern venue for assemblies, performances, presentations and wider school events. A permanent stage, together with a demountable extension, allows the hall to be adapted to suit a variety of uses, while an upper-level AV control room and viewing gallery supports professional lighting and sound installations.
Externally, improvements included repairs to existing hard landscaping together with enhanced accessible routes, ensuring the new facility is fully inclusive for all users.

Let’s build something exceptional together

CREATING MODERN LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS

Alongside the new building, Melhuish & Saunders undertook the refurbishment of the school's existing dining hall.

For the creation of a brighter, more efficient and welcoming environment, works included the removal of the existing stage wall to improve circulation, installation of new access stairs with glazed balustrading, replacement flooring, upgraded acoustic ceilings and a complete new LED lighting scheme.
A redesigned kitchen serving area, incorporating new fire-rated roller shutters, partitions and improved queuing arrangements, has significantly enhanced the functionality of the dining facilities while improving the overall experience for pupils and staff.
The refurbished space has been carefully modernised while integrating seamlessly with the school's existing buildings.
SUSTAINABLE BUILDING SERVICES

The project incorporated a range of modern building services designed to improve energy efficiency, comfort and long-term operational performance.

Electrical

A new electrical installation, linked directly to the existing school infrastructure, supports LED lighting, security systems, access control, fire alarms and data communications throughout the building.

Mechanical

Mechanical services include air conditioning to the main hall, energy-efficient electric heating, natural ventilation using roof-mounted Windcatchers and modern building management systems to maximise operational efficiency.
The installation of a 7.8kW solar photovoltaic system further supports the school's sustainability objectives by generating renewable energy and reducing long-term operating costs.
DELIVERING EDUCATION PROJECTS

Working within operational schools requires detailed planning, effective communication and a strong focus on safety.

Melhuish & Saunders worked closely with Somerset Council, the design team and school staff throughout the programme to ensure construction activities were carefully coordinated around the school's daily operation.
The successful completion of the new Assembly Hall and Dining Hall refurbishment has provided Pyrland School with modern, flexible facilities that will support learning, performance, dining and community activities for many years to come.
