PROJECT SUMMARY

Extension to existing building we previously built in Sidmouth

Melhuish & Saunders Ltd was appointed to deliver a two-storey extension to Beacon Medical Centre, providing additional clinical facilities to support the growing demands of the practice and the local community.
The project was undertaken within a live healthcare environment, requiring careful planning, close collaboration with the client, and strict health and safety management to minimise disruption to staff and patients throughout the construction programme.
The completed extension provides modern, purpose-built healthcare facilities that integrate seamlessly with the existing surgery, increasing the centre's capacity while maintaining a welcoming environment for patients and staff.

CONSTRUCTION & DESIGN

Constructing a new two-storey extension to the north side of the existing medical centre

Following the removal of the existing embankment and pathways, the new building was constructed using traditional construction methods, including concrete strip foundations, blockwork substructure and a block and beam ground floor.
The superstructure consists of blockwork with facing brickwork externally, while the first floor is supported using Posi-Joists beneath a trussed roof finished with concrete roof tiles.
Careful detailing ensured the extension complemented the appearance of the existing medical centre whilst providing modern clinical accommodation designed for future healthcare needs.

Modern Healthcare Environment

Internally, the extension has been finished to create a modern, practical and welcoming healthcare facility.
Walls were plastered and skimmed throughout, while suspended ceilings created dedicated service zones for mechanical and electrical installations and achieved the required fire protection standards.
New laminated doors with oak frames were installed to match the existing building, creating a seamless transition between the original surgery and the new extension. Durable vinyl flooring was installed throughout both floors to provide a practical and hygienic finish suitable for a busy healthcare environment.

MECHANICAL & ELECTRICAL

A comprehensive range of building services was installed throughout the extension to support the day-to-day operation of the medical centre.

Gas and Water

New gas and water supplies were installed, with electrical power extended from the existing building.

Data and communications

Data and communications infrastructure was also expanded to ensure full integration between the new and existing facilities.

Modern infrastructure

The completed installation provides a reliable, modern infrastructure capable of supporting the medical centre both now and into the future.
